YOU Going Wild
Never mind climate change, humanity’s disconnection from nature is one of the biggest threats to a sustainable future for us on this planet!
We’ve forgotten where our food, water and shelter come from, we’ve forgotten that we rely on nature to survive. Many have even forgotten the beauty and wisdom nature provides. One of the ways we aim to bridge this ever-increasing gap it to give people a chance to experience the beautiful wild places in Africa, through sport, nature walks and hands-on wildlife experiences.
NATURE WALKS
Rhino Trek
Four friends of Save the Rhino participated in the Rhino Trek held in May 2012 in Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal. Jo Paulson, Paul Paulson, Renata Loj and Yvette Chamberlain walked more than 60km over 5 days through Somkhanda Game Reserve and Zululand Rhino Reserve, both very important properties with key rhino populations. The aim of the Rhino trek was to allow people who raised money for rhino conservation to participate in an extreme wilderness trail through big 5 country, sleeping under the stars, viewing rhino and elephant up close, and enjoying the remote areas our rhino populations inhabit.
The Rhino Trek was led by experienced trail guides from Zululand Walking Safaris, which is a small freelance guided trails walking company based at Leopard Mountain Game lodge in the Zululand Rhino Reserve. Their small team of guides pride themselves in being able to offer clients unforgettable wildlife experiences and personalized service, which was definitely the case during the 2012 Rhino Trek.
Our Work With Rhino
What is a Rhino Ambassador?
An Ambassador is a business or individual who invests in Wildlands Conservation Trust and our anti poaching initiatives – aimed at keeping this ancient, iconic and beautiful animal alive for generations to come – in attempt to atop the senseless slaughter of this species.
How can I Adopt-a-Rhino?
For an annual fee of around R25 000 you will get to name a rhino on one of our reserves (or a partner reserve) in KZN. You will also receive regular updates on the status of ‘your’ rhino along with photographs.
Bonitas Wild Series
In 2007, Wildlands launched the WILD SERIES, with a view to profiling South Africa’s spectacular natural heritage whilst raising funds for key core conservation projects. The WILD SERIES was established off the back of two long-standing sporting events that the Trust had founded, namely the Mont-Aux-Sources Trail Run and the Giants Castle MTB Challenge. These two events provided South Africans with the opportunity of running or mountain biking in the uKhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage area, and have raised millions for conservation in the process.

Wildlands approached the BONITAS MEDICAL FUND with a view to securing their commitment to support the establishment of a series of mountain biking and trail running events. BONITAS and Wildlands shared an association with the Comrades Marathon and the WILD SERIES concept presented a logical extension of this association. They have been Series and event co-title sponsor ever since.
